Introduction To WSM Modifications

Unlike less expensive cookers, the WSM is a terrific performer right out of the box and doesn't require much in the way of modifications. In my opinion, the only thing you must do before using your new WSM is to buy a good quality thermometer for measuring the cooker temperature. You can read about your options on the Measuring Temperature In The WSM page and see how to mount a thermometer in the WSM on the Mounting A Thermometer page.

Having said that, there are lots of creative people out there that have developed modifications for the Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker. This series of topics provides an overview of the most common ones. Most of these modifications attempt to increase the cooking capacity, functionality, convenience, or style of the cooker.

As you browse through these modifications, you may find one that solves a problem you've been having with your WSM, or you may come across one and think, "That's crazy!" Remember, these mods aren't for everyone. You'll have to decide for yourself which ones, if any, make sense for you and the way you barbecue.

Disclaimers

  • I cannot vouch for the effectiveness of all of the modifications described in this section of the Web site, since I have not tried all of them.
  • Some modifications may void the warranty of your cooker or may conflict with the manufacturer's usage instructions. You undertake these modifications at your own risk.
  • Most modifications can be easily undone if you don't like the result, but there are a few that are permanent in nature (e.g., requiring that you drill holes through the body of the cooker). You should undertake these permanent modifications only if you're absolutely certain you want to do so, you're comfortable using power tools, and you're not afraid to poke a hole in your WSM.

If you're new to the Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker, my advice is to use it for at least six months before undertaking any permanent modification. By getting to know the performance characteristics of your cooker, by reading the various topics on this Web site, and by talking with other WSM enthusiasts on The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board, you may find an acceptable solution that eliminates the need for a permanent modification.
